Thank goodness they avoided an environmental catastrophe.

My main thought is that this is presumably the source of all the weird rumours that the soviets drilled down in the 70s and discovered Hell that I used to see passed around by fundamentalist Christians. Possibly also the source of the claim that they discovered Hollow Earth? Those always seemed related, to me, even if that one specified the hole was at one of the poles.

Ooh, interesting theory. Every so often I idly wonder about how hollow earth got started, but never gone down that particular... rabbithole.
