Forgot subthread title, adding it.

Capn James Fitzjames seems like a Business Studies student who's wound up on the mission when he should have been instagramming his coffee.

The bear continues to ruin things. It spoiled a few good story arcs this episode. Am reminded of the Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie show. Otoh we have a good complain about it each episode. It's bonding material.

Finally, an episode with minimal bear! They gave this ep a stupid overdramatic and implausible ending, but the rest of it was muuuuch better. I still can't tell most of these men apart. If ever there were a case for anime hair...

(den of geek is all 'it's so subtle, you'll never see the end coming!' Nah they just outright didn't show the setup, so they could have a twist, it was dumb.)

Their reviewers seem to have exact opposite taste to me; they also found the best scenes dull.

After reading a couple of Den of Geek recaps, I have concluded they are offensively stupid, but there are some more interesting ones on Canadian Geographic by some guys who are familiar with the history and the location and who can add context. They also seem to have better taste.

https://canadiangeographic.ca/topic/terror They go in reverse order so scroll down fast to avoid screenshot spoilers if mid-season.

I like that the guys write as though they're from another century.

When Peter Davison was Doctor Who, they made him and his male companion dye their hair to be very obviously different colours, so nobody would get confused. I want more of that energy (and different hats) if a show or film has more than one white man in a main role. Nobody thinks of the needs of the faceblind.

Yes! Like I'm not technically faceblind, I can tell after a whiiile, but I cannot tell the difference between men the way men seem to assume people can tell the difference between men. I think they have *tried* in this but they also don't do a good job of using people's names, so you're like "okay, that guy is handsomedoctor, and that's severedoctor." 3 times rule! I had to keep calling Fitzjames "edmuir tully" for like 5 episodes because I didn't know his name in this (some of it's not their fault tbf, we have Capn John Franklin, Capn Francis Crozier and Capn James Fitzjames. So all the names are annoyingly similar when you're first learning...). I keep mentally comparing to the Game of Thrones scenes in the North; apparently a skill I didn't notice 'til now was their ability to cast guys with really different faces. And in this they're in an awkward place where they try to keep the men's faces visible but cover their hair a lot; the idea is that it's cold but we can still tell who they are, but it just makes it hard to tell who's who AND makes it look warmer. It feels like every guy has one doppelganger. I get that they're working with a more limited palette of (facial) hairstyles and maybe trying to replicate the portraits of the crew a bit, but why we got two guys with curly black muttonchops, when we could've made one blond since there are no blonds? Why do the guys in a relationship have identical facial hair? (Fairplay there tho, they gave em different head hair and one of them has really distinctive eyes) Give someone a mole! Give someone freckles or a scar! Aaargh.

This is what they're working with: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6CXHzg3RKd4/TYp-HonYJFI/AAAAAAAAA1g/CIYpStHKsCg/s1600/all+crew+pics.jpg , and with like 100 more guys on top of that, so I appreciate how much they *have* distinguished them even though it's not enough. Friend was like "they should give one guy a really broad Welsh accent" but my guess is they're trying for historical accuracy there too. But like... feels like they go for historical accuracy for everything that makes it a worse audience experience, and then ditch it when it would be good. I'd prefer the odd anachronistic hairstyle but with no demon bear...

Watched another ep.

Collins' journey seems almost like a dark comedy where it's the worst nightmare of someone considering telling their dr about their mental health problems.

Separately, just when I thought I knew who a guy was, everyone started calling him by a different name and I realised I'd got him mixed up. I don't think it was too strange of me; the whole ep showed him struggling to walk and needing morphine. A guy lost a leg and ended up with a wooden one a few eps ago. So I thought this was that guy. It wasn't. Istg they had the same fucking haircut.

And then. Another guy who I could actually recognise... turned out to be a crazy criminal impostor. Not only does this add nothing to the show, it feels like the show is trolling me for my inability to recognise any of these men.

Bear ruined another ep. It's kinda phenomenal how badly this bear ruins things. It destroys the tension of every scene it touches. And the writers are somehow convinced it's scary, so they always introduce it at the climax, and kill the scene. "It bounds into a scene and makes it irrelevant" says friend. I have never seen anything less scary than this fucking bear. I know I am repeating myself but I CANNOT get over what a fundamentally bad idea it is, and how effectively it ruins an otherwise good show. The actors are there doing a fantastic job, some of the monologues are marvellous, and then this FUCKING BEAR. It removes all the emotion from deaths. It destroys every interesting plot and swaps it for "bear".

Aaaaaargh

Minimal bear in this ep. Someone on meme mentioned wanting a variation on doesthedogdie for istheregendershit, maybe we also need isthereabear.

Finished the show! Mixed ending; all the issues I had with the rest of the show persisted-- but the acting was great as always. It's a real shame they didn't have better material for the cast to work with. All the little expressions and reactions...

But also I really wish someone out there had made some vid mashups with Frozen (looked on youtube, found none). I think it'd be so funny to use audio from one in the other, but I don't do video editing so I know I'll never get to making it myself.
