Date: 2021-11-16 02:06 am (UTC)Something I'm having fun with is thinking about how much might have changed between the time she was first 'discovered' and the time the gamer first encounters her. I ignore compilation and so on so I think the earliest is 5 years ago... Everything else is narrated (like ifalna's interview tapes with gast). Also very curious about what would've tipped Ifalna off about its identity.

Re: FF7

I think Vincent *was* one of the taller characters, according to the manual, but he's not normally pictured as chunky with it. But you could fit two Hojo heads in one Vincent head. They need to go remake advent children with this in mind.

But seriously, I got that vibe from him, too. And Hojo was a dedicated "scientist," despite the sociopathy and derangement, so maybe he was more interesting to her.
Re: FF7
Date: 2021-11-16 03:27 pm (UTC)If ever I put Vincent in a fic I basically ignore his dialogue style because I think it's the result of bad translation and he didn't really sound that pathetic, but Hojo does seem like more of a realist. One idea I'm playing with atm is that he was her highschool bf so they just kind of did everything together for years, even if they weren't a great fit or he was outright abusive, and she'd never worked out how to break up with anyone. They could've started dating because they both got good marks in science or something silly like that. I know a lot of fic characterises Vincent as being kinda dim... I'm just not sure that's enough because there's no evidence Hojo is smart. :P Then also I think you have to be super self-destructive and depressed to entertain the jenova project as she did, so that's gotta come into it.
So yeah I was *initially* going to write a fic that had her dragged along in this expired old miserable highschool relationship while V tried and failed to convince her to leave and be with him, meanwhile she'd realised she wasn't into men and she was sick of them thinking she was a prospect and at least Hojo was always busy these days. But then none of her dialogue came out right for that. Not yet sure if I'll go back and rewrite, or if I'll just see where it goes.
(Incidentally there's an author called mobiusstripper who writes them well. I've never seen anyone who writes them quite as I prefer to imagine them but hers is one of the closer ones and I like it as its own thing.)

But yeah, agreed that the timeline is odd there. I wondered if Gast might not've been involved with that branch of the Jenova project, but Vincent has a line in his flashback about not being able to stop Hojo AND Gast. So apparently he supported the experiment. Also agree about preferring a more positive (or at least upbeat) Gast to yet another shady character. I guess it's possible to go the other way and make him even worse than Hojo? Not really any evidence for that, either. And if he were an absolute scumbag, his relationship with Ifalna would make no sense bc I don't think she'd be easy to manipulate into one. Hmmmm.

If Remake II starts with the Nibelheim flashback and includes this scene, I will forgive the entire rest of the compilation for existing.

Yes! So many possibilities! Could be as early as when she and Gast met, that being the reason she stuck around him to at the start. Would be dramatic if she found out later, after she'd been dating Gast for a while, or when she first arrived at Shinra. It's unlikely she would've seen the Jenova doll, but argh, imagine her reaction if she did.

I was gonna tentatively agree but then I just saw some DC clips and fell about laughing so now I'm not sure. Every so often I do get the perverse urge to play DC just to see how bad the gameplay is. But then I remember I could be doing literally anything else...
And yeah, I seem to remember there were several things that implied Gast was fully onboard with the experiment, which clash with the rest of the game's 'Gast was a GOOD scientist, not like that horrible Hojo'. I think Vincent may be the only character who ever implies Gast did something wrong. Vaguely toying with the idea of him thinking he was saving a baby from illness or something like that, but maybe that's too saccharin, and then Vincent comes off as unreasonable. Suppose Gast could've been away for a small stretch and then Hojo just lied about the initial motivation for the injections to him and pretended it was something like that. 'rule 1: Hojo Lies' is probably applicable all over the place.
