I think I might have some kind of explanation, might be wrong though.

I have make boba tea at home using a kit and powder, because boba tea is so rare where I live. To do that, I have to 'brew' the tea by adding a powder packet to specifically hot water. All ice tea is brewed hot, so it makes sense that boba tea would, too. I only need to use 100 ml of water, though.

To 'fill out' the rest of the cup and cool it down quickly, I add 200ml ice. Most of it melts, some of it stays and keeps generating cold. This gives me a cup with ca 300 ml of iced milk tea, to which I add boba pearls.

Fingers crossed that this is what they're doing, and not some stupid scam to replace part of the tea with ice.

Interesting theory. The drink was kinda warm when I received it (which seemed like evidence against the "this drink is made in batches in advance" theory), so that fits. It was a menu option that couldn't be selected in hot (which was a shame because I would've preferred it hot anyway). Online it says they cool drinks by shaking them in a shaker of ice, but wouldn't be surprised if it's just easier to put the ice in the cup. So maybe they made it icy to "improve" it and the "hot" options on their menu == no ice.

(also sorry to hear you are deprived of boba! I looked on a map and apparently there are 15 boba places within a mile of me. So I guess I'm spoiled.)
