Re: How's life?
Date: 2021-10-13 02:26 am (UTC)I feel like you almost have to. Back when I was doing history & had an unhealthy obsession with methods, the prof kept reminding us we had to reconstruct. We can't project the anachronistic attitudes of our time into the past & we really have to be able to imagine the concerns/considerations of the time.
Will future historians be able to contextualise & say "Yes they look like they've made it but really that time was wracked with doom & soulsearching"? IDK. But it almost feels like they have to. Pop culture can be a good time capsule for the anxieties of a time. Having social media records must be a boon b/c sudden wealth of info but also hard b/c so much to sift through and you have to ask yourself whether a given post is representative.
It's one reason I like the early Shadowrun as a setting. You can see so much of American period anxieties just baked into the setting, surrounding socjus movements internally, Japan, etc.
