Every so often I talk to someone who thinks of reading as this act of passive consumption and it's jarring. I don't think it's possible for me to read something without thinking about how it was constructed, what was going through the author's head, what I can shamelessly steal, technique, how I would to try to replicate it, etc. I find it hard to stick to reading for any length of time because it makes me want to charge off and write, and I'm surprised when I get pulled into a narrative deeply enough that I'm not seeing it from a writing perspective. It's weird thinking that there are people out there who don't do this, and honestly it kind of creeps me out, though I'm probably being silly. It's not like I notice camera angles in films...

I'm just like "what are you DOING when you read a book if you're not trying to mindread the author?!" I dunno seems like a restricted way to live.

I don't try to mindread the author. I generally don't care about what the author was thinking.

But I do pause at things I have a strong reaction to and try to work out what the author is doing that worked or didn't work.

I'm like that with some types of visual stuff, and maybe half passive half active when I'm reading. I get so easily immersed in anything with a plot that technique often doesn't register until I read it a second time. I think most people I meet have *some* topic or skill that they're super analytical about (selection bias? idk). But maybe if that thing isn't writing or speaking, it can be more difficult to express themselves about it. At least I have that problem sometimes.
