Also, they used to be bigger, and when we were small we would have eaten them ridiculously slowly which adds to the mess.

True! When I picture eating them as a kid, I remember them as these massive disappointments: kinda stale, hard to chew, with chocolate falling off everywhere. Always wished I'd got a yorkie instead. Nowadays I like them with tea. Not sure how much is the way the chocolate has changed and how much was just a case of being given stale old curly wurlies at parties as a child and now having the income to buy them before their expiry date.
